Story

Vergelegen was founded by Willem Adriaan van der Stel , who replaced his father as the Cape governor in 1699.

Critics such as Tim Atkin and Robert Parker regularly give the winery the highest ratings. The word "vergelegen" means "far away". However, the isolated location on fertile soil offers ideal growing conditions. Vergelegen winery is also committed to animal welfare and sustainability.

Tasting Notes

Pair this richly textured wine, with its dark plum colour and ripe nose of blackcurrant, red cherry, cedar, pencil, and cigar box, with Tchaikovsky's “Letter Scene” from Eugene Onegin. The aria's deep emotional intensity and sweeping melody echoes the wine's complex and full-bodied profile. The taste of raspberry, black cherry, spice and a hint of gaminess adds a further layer to the experience. Just as the aria lingers with its profound expression, the wine’s soft tannins and long aftertaste create a lasting impression, making this pairing a harmonious and evocative experience.

Food Pairing

Serve this complex red wine with a slow braised lamb shank, beef risotto or rib-eye steak.

Wine Makers Note

The grapes were harvested by hand and cooled overnight. The long maceration and temperature-controlled fermentation gave the wine soft tannins, incredible complexity and a stable colour. The wine then matured for 18 months in 20% new French barriques.
