Story

The name Kanonkop is derived from a hillock (kop) on the Simonsberg mountain above the wine estate. During the 17th and 18th centuries, a cannon (kanon) was fired to announce the arrival of sailing ships entering Table Bay. The roar of the cannon would be the signal to local farmers, who were waiting to make the 50-kilometer journey to the harbour, to load up their wagons with fresh fruit and vegetables to barter their produce.

Tasting Notes

Pair this crimson red wine, rich with aromas of raspberries, dark cherries, and black plums, with the aria "Habanera" from Bizet’s Carmen. The aria’s sensual and bold character mirrors the wine’s supple tannins, fresh acidity, and explosive fruit flavours. Just as the Habanera lingers in the listener's mind, the wine’s juicy fruit and hint of chocolate leave a lasting impression on the palate, creating a passionate and memorable pairing.

Food Pairing

This Cape Blend is the perfect match for barbecued meats, roast chicken, roast beef or lamb, and hearty stews. Its robust character and rich flavours beautifully complement the smoky, savory notes of grilled and roasted dishes, while its balanced structure enhances the depth of flavouurs in burgers and stews. Whether you're enjoying a casual barbecue or a comforting roast, this blend elevates each bite, making every meal a flavourful and satisfying experience.

Wine Makers Note

The Cape Blend category requires a minimum Pinotage component of 30%. In the Kadette, the Pinotage element is rounded off with Cabernet Sauvignon, Cabernet Franc and Merlot, all aged in oak. The result is an opulent red wine offering an array of red and black fruit flavours underscored by depth and complexity.
